Join us for a screening of “Nomoto: A B.C. Tragedy,” directed by Chad Townsend, and learn about the life of Kyuichi Nomoto, one of the first Japanese Canadian UBC graduates. Follow his journey from Vancouver to the B.C. Interior as a minister during Japanese internment and gain insight into the toll that this challenging period had on Nomoto’s mental health. Following the screening, learn about the mental health activism that members of the Japanese Canadian community are doing. Facilitator Nico Koyanagi will be joined by Peter Tatsuo Wallace, Project Manager for the Anglican Healing Fund for Japanese Canadians, Patti Ayukawa, organizer of Komorebi, the Japanese Canadian Vancouver Island Book Club, and Megan Wray, writer for Mata Ashita, an intergenerational writing circle for Japanese Canadians.

Tragedy（ノモト：B.C.の悲劇）」の上映会に、ぜひご参加ください。チャド・タウンゼンド監督によるこの作品は、初めての日系カナダ人UBC卒業生の１人であるキュウイチ・ノモトの生涯について学ぶことができるドキュメンタリーです。彼の旅をたどり、バンクーバーからB.C.内陸部へと移り、日系人収容所での牧師としての生活を送った様子や、この困難な時期が野本氏の精神的健康に与えた影響について知ってください。上映後には、日系カナダ人コミュニティのメンバーが行っているメンタルヘルスの取り組みについて学びます。ファシリテーターのニコ・コヤナギ氏に加えて、日本カナダ人のためのアングリカン教会癒やし基金プロジェクトマネージャーであるピーター・タツオ・ウォレス氏、日系カナダ人バンクーバー島のブッククラブ「Komorebi」のオーガナイザーであるパティ・アユカワ氏、そして日系カナダ人のための世代を超えた執筆サークル「Mata Ashita」のライターであるメーガン・レイ氏も参加します。 

After the panel, participants are invited to join an informal debrief in the courtyard of the Firehall Arts Centre. This is an opportunity to discuss the film and any reactions that attendees had following the screening. Trained facilitators will be present to assist navigating challenging conversations. 

パネルディスカッションの後、参加者はファイアーホール・アート・センターの中庭でディブリーフにご参加いただけます。このディブリーフは形式張らないもので、映画の内容や上映後の参加者の感想について話し合う機会です。難しい会話を円滑に進めるために、訓練を受けたファシリテーターが同席し、参加者をサポートします。
 

Chad Townsend is an ecologist and planner who splits his time between Vancouver and New Denver. It was his link to an old white church near Slocan Lake that was the starting point on his journey toward discovering the story of Nomoto. On a 2019 trip to the United Church Archives in Gastown to look for old photographs of the building, he was shown a dusty box of typed letters from the 1940s — much research followed, he put together a small team, gained even more respect for the Japanese Canadian community, and spent many pandemic hours assembling this film.
チャド・タウンゼンドはエコロジスト兼プランナーであり、バンクーバーとニューデンバーの間を行き来しています。スローカン湖近くにある古い白い教会との縁が、ノモト氏の物語を探求する彼の旅の出発点でした。彼が２０１９年にガスタウンのユナイテッド・チャーチ・アーカイブに古い建物の写真を探しに行った際、埃を被った箱を見せられました。そこには、１９４０年代にタイプライターで書かれた手紙が入っていました——それ以降、彼は多くの研究を行い、小さなチームを結成し、日系カナダ人コミュニティにさらなる敬意を抱きながら、パンデミックの間に多くの時間を費やしてこの映画を制作しました。 

Nico (she/they) is a mixed-race Yonsei, community organizer, mediator, and peer supporter moved by food, plants, art, and human connection. Nico is interested in how we can live with more compassion, kindness, and care towards ourselves, each other, and the earth alongside challenging and resisting colonialism and capitalism. She always looks forward to connecting with Japanese Canadians through our shared history and present as we build together for the future.
