IzumonookunI is a multidisciplinary dance inspired by Izumo no Okuni, the 17th century cis-female founder of kabuki: a Japanese dance-drama form that currently contains little trace of its cis-female-centric, grassroots, counter-cultural origins. Choreographer Aretha Aoki and Bessie-nominated sound designer and artist Ryan MacDonald are resurrecting and re-imagining Okuni as a punk/synthwave/glam-goth figure. IzumonookunI aims to reclaim the origins of kabuki, collapse reductive binaries, and allow audiences to make new connections between seemingly disparate forms. 

IzumonookunI は、１７世紀に歌舞伎をはじめたシス女性である出雲の阿国にインスパイアされた多分野にわたるダンスです。歌舞伎は日本の舞踊劇で、その起源はシス女性中心、一般大衆、カウンターカルチャーでありますが、現在ではその痕跡はほとんど見られません。振付師のAretha Aokiとベッシー賞にノミネートされたサウンドデザイナー兼アーティストのRyan MacDonaldは、阿国をパンク/シンセウェーブ/グラムゴスとして復活させ、再構築しています。歌舞伎の起源を取り戻し、還元的な二項対立をなくし、観客が異質に見える形式を新たに結びつけることを目的としています。 

Aoki and MacDonald are multimedia artists whose collaborative, genre-defying performances have been presented nationally and internationally. Accompanying them is Sawagi Taiko, the first all-women taiko group in Canada founded in 1990. They are a multi-generational group of women of East Asian and Indigenous heritage, brought together by their shared passion for the Japanese drum. 

Aoki と MacDonald はマルチメディア・アーティストで、ジャンルにとらわれないコラボレーション・パフォーマンスは国内外で行なわれている。1990年に結成されたカナダ初の女性だけの太鼓グループ、さわぎ太鼓が共演します。東アジアとインディジナスのヘリテージを持つ女性たちで活動する、和太鼓への情熱を持った多世代グループです。
