Spatial Poetics, an evening of experimental performance pieces, returns July 3rd with Spatial Poetics XIII: WeMix. In Spatial Poetics, artists are invited to create new performance-based work together and encouraged to work beyond their usual disciplines.

This thirteenth edition of Spatial Poetics is curated by YACTAC – the Young Asian Collective Twins Artist Collective – who are two sets of twin sisters (Janice & Justine Cheung and Peggy & Karen Ngan). As the title suggests, “WeMix” features an eclectic mix of emerging Asian Canadian artists working in a variety of different forms. As working artists themselves, YACTAC’s affinity runs deep with interdisciplinary and collaborative practice. “It is like a milkshake,” say YACTAC. “We mix butoh, cello, conceptual art, poetry, music and design.”

Among the collaborating artists are visual artist Kuh Del Rosario and graphic designer Ryan Romero, who will converge to explore the grey area between contemporary art and design through performance. The concept of collectivity will be examined in a live performance by interdisciplinary artist Patrick Cruz with musicians Franco Maravilla, Miguel Maravilla and Charity Cruz and dancer Michelle Lui. Award-winning spoken word artist, author and filmmaker Kagan Goh, dancer/choreographer Salome Nieto and cellist/composer Nicholas Epperson will pay homage to Japanese Canadians through poems, music and dance.

Spatial Poetics XIII: WeMix is a presentation for the upcoming 38th Annual Powell Street Festival taking place August 1 – 3 at Oppenheimer Park and other venues.
