The Right to Remain Research Collective hosts a series of informal conversation circles, complete with food, film, and fun. A short film about the community’s long-standing pursuit of rent control for SRO tenants, including recent “victories” like the City of Vancouver’s vacancy control bylaw will be featured. Conversation circles will be grounded in the understanding that a key missing ingredient for improving people’s lives is the tenants themselves, who, when adequately resourced, and trusted, know what is best for their own lives and buildings. Just as the Japanese Canadians who once lived in and even built SROs, tenants today find ways to survive, even thrive, against so much adversity through a culture of mutual support and a collective sense of place.  

If you are a tenant of a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotel, please visit us at our booth to grab complimentary food vouchers for festival food kiosks. Then, join us in conversation about realizing a community vision for healthier, tenant-controlled SROs in the Downtown Eastside. Festival participants who are not SRO tenants but would like to learn about opportunities to lend your support are welcome to join. Scheduled start times for circles will be posted at The Right to Remain Community booth. 

Right to Remain Research Collectiveは、食事、映画、そして楽しい時間を過ごすための非公式なカンバセーションサークルを開催しています。バンクーバー市の空室対策条例のような最の「勝利」を含め、SROテナントの家賃統制を長年追求してきたコミュニティについての短編映画も上映される予定です。カンバセーションサークルは、人々の生活を改善するために欠けている重要な要素はテナント自身であり、テナントが十分な資源と信頼を得ていれば、自分たちの生活と建物にとって何がベストかを知っているという理解に基づいて行われます。かつてSROに住み、SROを建設した日系カナダ人のように、現在のテナントは、相互支援と集団意識という文化を通じて、多くの逆境を生き抜き、さらには繁栄する方法を見出しているのです。
