Suzanne Elki Yoko Hartmann will read from her hybrid memoir and Japanese Canadian history “The Nail That Sticks Out.” Hartmann’s mother was only eight months old in April 1942 when torn from her Victoria home. The family was forced to bunk in horse stalls at Vancouver’s Hastings Park before being sent to an incarceration camp in the Slocan Valley. The work explores folk dancing, learning Japanese and more. About the Author: Suzanne Elki Yoko Hartmann is a Toronto-based editor and writer with an MFA in creative nonfiction from the University of King’s College. Her writing reflects her roots as a fourth-generation Japanese Canadian with German ancestry and explores meaningful coincidences, cultural memories and identity.
