Tate/殺陣 is a traditional Japanese performing art that combines samurai sword fighting with expressive acting. Unlike martial arts or sports, it emphasizes storytelling through movement and is widely seen in samurai films and theatre. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the history of Tate, and try basic movements themselves, like those seen in samurai films. Through this hands-on experience, they can learn how movement, timing, and expression work together to create samurai art. 

About the Facilitators: Hitotose is a samurai performance group founded by Haruno and Yuki, blending international expertise in live performance and workshops. They perform across the continent and lead workshops at the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre, Tōzenji (a Japanese Buddhist temple), and local theatres such as the Arts Club Theatre and Bard on the Beach. Both are professional actors with roles in the Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning series Shōgun.
