Genki Bear: Memoirs of a Granddaughter is a heartfelt and hilarious theatrical journey following Misty’s evolving relationship with her Japanese grandmother, Baachan. Created by Kizuna Theatre, the play blends storytelling, physical theatre, and bunraku-inspired puppetry to explore identity, heritage, and intergenerational bonds.

Leaping across time — from childhood visits to a life-changing trip to Japan — Genki Bear features a beautifully crafted puppet as Baachan, a grown woman in a Care Bear costume, an over-the-top samurai sword fight, and some truly questionable wigs. Full of laughter and surprise, the show is also a moving reflection on memory, love, and cultural connection.

Suitable for ages 10 and up, Genki Bear is an inventive tribute to the powerful, complex love between grandparents and grandchildren, and a celebration of the sassiest grandma you’ll ever meet.
