Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu (Sugawara Budo Vancouver)

Location: Online

Demonstrated by Kelvin Po and Maki Sumitani, Sugawara Budo Vancouver will showcase their sword forms and highlight their techniques in a video demonstration. This will be much like their yearly live performances but scaled back since they cannot have the usual group perform. It will be a selection of solo and pair form techniques with swords and possibly other weapons.

Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu is a classical martial art focusing on sword fighting techniques. Sugawara Budo Vancouver trains to fight with traditional samurai weapons such as the long and short sword, fighting staff, spear, and naginata (halberd). Modern kendo and iaido were born from the older schools of kenjutsu but Katori Shinto Ryu’s techniques are practiced in their unmodified forms and the focus is on the complete warrior who can utilize all weapons in practical combat at full speed.

Katori Shinto Ryu Kenjutsu is the oldest extant verifiable kenjutsu style in the world. Despite practitioners of the style being rare outside of Japan, the dojo’s founders had been able to bring the style when they immigrated to Canada from Japan, and in pre-COVID times, they had fostered partnerships with their home dojo in Japan and sister dojos across the globe.
