Join us for an interactive, intergenerational workshop exploring what it means to be Japanese Canadian today. This two-hour session will begin with short videos and brief presentations sharing community stories and research on Japanese Canadian (JC) youth identities. We will have group discussions on what it means to be a Japanese Canadian (including JC mixed and LGBTQ identities), so whether you’re currently a youth or just remember being one, all ages are welcome! 

About the Facilitators: Izumi Sakamoto (she/her), an immigrant scholar, founded the Japanese Canadian Arts and Activism Project (JCAAP) at the University of Toronto. Our presenters/team members reflect multiple generations of Japanese Canadian experience: Momo Ando (she/her), a Shin-Nisei from Vancouver and Niagara-on-the-Lake; Ai Yamamoto (they/she) Shin-Nisei from Tkaronto whose Nisei relatives survived incarceration; Sofia MacPherson (she/her; Gosei) from Edmonton; and Izumi Niki (she/her), an immigrant from Japan whose doctoral work in Tkaronto explores elder care by Japanese caregivers.
