Japanese Event Vancouver 2025 Powell Street Festival - Za Daikon

A Vancouver-based amateur Japanese theatrical group formed in 1994. They perform Japanese comedies, folktales, and staged readings at various community events. In Japanese with English subtitles.

Za Daikon presents the story of Katsugoro, a skilled but often unreliable fishmonger who sells fresh seafood from a shoulder pole. Despite his talent, Katsugoro is a heavy drinker who frequently misses work and lives in poverty in a small back-alley tenement. One morning, his wife rouses him early, and he reluctantly sets off to the Shiba fish market to restock. Arriving before it opens, he waits by the beach and finds a leather wallet washed up from the sea at his feet.  Inside there is…

天秤棒一本で行商をしている魚屋の勝五郎は、腕はいいものの酒飲みで、仕事も休みがちな裏長屋の貧乏暮らし。その日も女房に朝早くにたたき起こされて、しぶしぶ芝の魚河岸に仕入れに向かう。しかし時間が早すぎて市場の開くのを浜辺で待っていると、足元に海中から打ち寄せられてきた革の財布を見つける。中を見ると…
