Having recently brought in two new members who were born and trained in Japan, Sansho Daiko is stretching our wings and finding new ways to express our West Coast taiko aesthetic within a framework of mutual growth and learning. Through mask work and the use of pre-recorded sounds, we are exploring an ever-more ecological approach, seeking to become closer to the earth and sea through our practice.

Sansho Daiko Taiko takes its name from sansho, the spicy red pepper that is one of the ingredients of shichimi togarashi, the Japanese seven-spice powder added to dishes to enhance the flavour. Sansho Daiko can trace its roots directly to the birth of taiko in Canada, while integrating members who trained in Japan. The members of the group share a love of experimentation and exploration. Like its namesake spice, Sansho Daiko seeks to infuse the west coast taiko scene with a little heat.

山椒太鼓は近年、日本で生まれ育ち修行を積んだ2名の新メンバーを迎え、カナダ西海岸の太鼓美学をより広げ、互いに学び合い、成長する枠組みの中で新たな表現方法を模索しています。私たちは仮面を使った演出や事前録音した音の活用を通じて、より自然と共生する太鼓のあり方を探求しており、大地や海とより深くつながるような実践を目指しています。

「山椒太鼓」という名前は、日本の七味唐辛子の一つの原料である山椒に由来しています。料理の風味を引き立てるスパイスのように、山椒太鼓も西海岸の太鼓シーンにちょっとした刺激と熱を加える存在でありたいと考えています。山椒太鼓は、カナダにおける太鼓の黎明期にそのルーツを持ちながら、日本で修行を積んだメンバーも加えた、多様性あるグループです。メンバーは皆、実験的で創造的な表現への情熱を共有しています。
