Vancouver Japanese Language School-Japanese Hall: Room #407
Led by Patricia Ayukawa, this project invites visitors into a temporary, white-painted phone booth — a quiet, reflective portal for connection and remembrance. Located in the Powell Street area, the booth offers space to write the names of loved ones who have passed and, for those who choose, to make a symbolic phone call to them. It acts as a channel to the land, ancestors, the transitioning community, and absent loved ones — a tender opening in space where grief, memory, and presence can coexist. Installed during the Powell Street Festival, it offers a private yet communal opportunity to move through feelings of loss with care.
Patricia Ayukawa is a sansei community cultivator and organizer. She is rooted in the Japanese Canadian community and promotes the creation of safe community spaces, gatherings and supportive structures.
