As writers, Leanne Toshiko Simpson and Erica H Isomura both integrate Japanese Canadian history and mixed-race yonsei identity into their cross-genre work. Leanne’s debut romantic comedy, Never Been Better, takes readers to a glamorous destination wedding hosted by a Japanese Canadian family whose daughter feels she can’t reveal her struggles with bipolar in the face of her family’s historical hardship. Meanwhile, Erica’s visual book Sifting follows a yonsei Japanese and Chinese Canadian artist who road trips to the northwest coast of BC in search of her late grandmother’s birthplace, combining written prose, poetry, mixed-media, and illustrations.  

By engaging with complex family histories through unconventional approaches to genre, both authors explore cross-cultural perspectives and overlapping histories in innovative and meaningful ways. Leanne and Erica will read from their latest projects and discuss how their understanding of JC histories shape their respective genres. 

Leanne Toshiko Simpson is a mixed-race Yonsei writer who lives with bipolar disorder. She was named Scarborough’s Emerging Writer in 2016 and was nominated for the Journey Prize in 2019. She co-founded a reflective writing program at Canada’s largest mental health hospital and teaches at the University of Toronto and with Mata Ashita. Since her hospitalization, Simpson has connected with students, cultural centres, companies and media outlets about the power of storytelling in shaping recovery. Leanne recently released her debut novel Never Been Better with HarperCollins Canada and Putnam Books in the US. 

Erica H Isomura is a writer and multi-disciplinary artist, exploring graphic forms, bookmaking, and mixed-media art. In 2023, Erica was artist-in-residence at The Blue Cabin Floating Artist Residency in Steveston Village, BC. Her work has appeared in Canthius, ArtsEverywhere.ca, ROOM, The Fiddlehead, and Vallum: Contemporary Poetry, among others. Erica is currently an MFA candidate in creative writing at the University of Guelph, where she is at work on a graphic novel.

リーンとエリカは、ジャンルの枠を超えた独自のアプローチによって複雑な家族の歴史に取り組むことで、異文化の視点や重なる歴史を革新的かつ意味深い方法で探求しています。二人の作家は最新作からの朗読を行い、日系カナダ人の歴史に対する理解がそれぞれのジャンルをどのように形成しているかについて議論します。
