Clala Dance Project

Location: Online

Tomoyo and her collaborators are exploring Japanese spirituality and after life through dance. The work “kikoeteimasuka”, which can be loosely translated from Japanese to “Can you hear me?” was initially created in Japan and was performed at the All Japan Dance Festival (2013) and REVERBDance Festival (2016) in New York. Currently they are further developing the work by compiling not only Japanese spiritual ideas but stories and ideas from other cultures and religions.

Tomoyo Yamada is an interdisciplinary artist whose primary media are dance and choreography. Born in Japan and educated in the United States, she has spent most of her life traveling between North America and Japan, negotiating distinct cultural identities. Her practice is influenced by her ongoing research into identity politics and her self-reflexive interrogation of transnational cultural differences.
