Powell Street Festival Society presents the release of:

Matsuri: A Collection of Works by Japanese Canadian Musicians and Composers

Matsuri CD cover

The 2003 Powell Street Festival saw the launch of Matsuri, a diverse and eclectic collection of works by Japanese Canadian musicians, plus an exclusive live track by Japanese artist Noriko Tujiko. The CD spans across genres, from Ramones-style garage pop to indie rock to folk to ambient electronic to world beat to abstract noise. The participating artists have either performed at the Festival in the past, or hope to in the future.

Song influences range from the traditional (as in Takeo Yamashiro’s magnificent shakuhachi [flute] piece which opens the CD); to the contemporary (as in the Riff Randells’ hit pop punk songLethal Lipgloss, or Mitchell Akiyama’s gorgeous, ambient piece and sun into dust); to category-defying (Sawagi Taiko’s Bar Doors combines taiko drumming, blues bass, and spoken word; Nishihara & Kage use taiko and piano to reinterpret classical piano repertoire); to chaos (Masa Anzai, the token John Zorn-inspired artist (think his Filmworks series), gives us a sick and twisted noise piece which he claims is the only song he’s written that represents his Japanese identity. Go figure.) The CD also features an exclusive live track recorded at the 2002 Festival by Japan’s Noriko Tujiko, a critically-acclaimed laptop composer/vocalist on Austria’s Mego Records label.
